Philipsburg Manor, Sleepy Hollow, NY

 
We were on our way to visit Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate but, as usual, when we are on the East Coast, parking was a problem.  The small lot by the Visitor Center was completely packed when we arrived.  Luckily, they had overflow parking which was a couple blocks behind the Visitor Center.  However, after we parked the truck, we found ourselves wandering up a dirt path along the Hudson River.  As we followed the path, we could see Philipsburg Manor across the water.  

This manor is famous for a couple of reasons. The first one is that Frederick Philipse III, Lord of the vast Manor of Philipsburg, was one of 200 in NY who signed the Declaration of Dependence in 1776 and remained loyal to England. George Washington ordered him arrested later in 1776 and he escaped back to England where he died. 

All the guides at the Manor are dressed in costumes from the period.

This costumed slave came over for lunch at the Visitor Center.

The second reason that this place is famous is because Frederick Phiipse III had slaves who ran his mill business. The mill had tenanted farmers but the mill itself was operated by slaves. We don't often hear about slavery being up north but history shows that it was.

All the same the place is just lovely and very photogenic!!
