Bentsen Rio Grande State Park

It was a beautiful day today, blue skies, in the 70's and so we headed out to do some hiking at the State Park. Normally, they have Trams that will drop you off at various places in the park but today we did a heck of a lot of walking. The Trams aren't running due to Covid and the Gift Shop is closed also.

Javelina

You can normally see these guys at the bird blind at this park. There is a water hole there. Just be quiet when you come up the boardwalk to the blind. Today there were three of them getting water when a group of people came up to the blind talking and laughing and by the time they walked up the ramp to the blind, the javelinas were gone. It always pays to keep quiet when approaching a blind! lol

Groove-billed Ani
We have seen one of these before but there were several here

Golden Fronted Woodpecker

Great-tailed Grackle

More Groove-billed Anis

We searched for this bird every time we heard one was spotted and it took years to find one, but once we did, we have now seen them many times!

Building the wall

The park is exempt from construction of the Border Wall within its boundaries. Technically, the flood protection feature between the parking lot and the park property is not "within" the park (though it is within the habitat area of the park) so the wall construction has proceeded. Fears are that, in the event of a major flood, the wall will trap wildlife fleeing to the higher (dry) ground behind the flood protection levee and they will drown.

Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge

The weather was in the 70's today so we headed out to do a bit of hiking in the refuge. This refuge is so close to us, I don't know why we don't go here more often. Of course, these days they aren't feeding birds or keeping much up but it is still a beautiful place. I love the area with all the Spanish Moss on the trees. It is like walking in a wonderland.

Lots of Different Hiking Trails Here

Huge Nest In This Tree

Altamira Oriole

I just love these trees - they feel other worldly!

There are a couple of these towers that you can climb to get a view from above.

No food left and no birds either!

A couple of Great Kiskadees

I may be wrong, but I believe this is the only refuge that has these draped trees.

Lee with Mask On - we were running into people on this trail - had a bunch of scouts and their families. We were hoping to lose them since they were so noisy they scared all the birds away for miles!

A Great Kiskadee was one of the first
ones back after the group passed us.
