Madame Queen - 5000 Series Locomotive

A landmark in downtown Amarillo for almost 50 years, the Madame Queen locomotive may have one more trip to take. And though it crossed nearly 2 million miles during its quarter-century service run, its last trip could be the most challenging.
The Madame Queen is a downright treasure for railroad enthusiasts. The engine was an experimental prototype for the 5000 series and two other classes of locomotives.  "It's the only one like it in the world," said Sam Teague, president of the Railroad Artifact Preservation Society. "It's not the only one left - it's the only one there ever was like it."

Madame Queen has been a landmark in Amarillo for almost 50 years after the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway gave the engine to the city after it was retired.  It crossed nearly 2 million miles during its quarter-century service run.
