Shell Falls

Today we drove down Highway US 14 headed toward Shell Falls and I was just dying because the scenery on this road is just awesome but I was  on the wrong side of the road to get any pictures.  I prayed it would still be as clear and sunny on the way back.

When we finally got to the sign to the entrance of the Falls, we found that everything was closed until Memorial Day. However, it was easy to wander around the fence and get to the falls so that is what we did.

What an awesome sight it is!  The website says  the "Over the past million years, Shell Falls has incised a deep chasm through the sedimentary stone and ancient granite. The water of Shell Falls, dropping at a rate of 3,600 gallons per second, follows fractures in the resistant granite. Shell Canyon is named for the shell fossils found in the sedimentary canyon walls."

The place is set up for visitors with lots of structures built into the side of the canyon to help visitors view the falls and surrounding area. We were sure glad we decided to stop in even though the falls were open to visitors until the end of the month.
