Makoshika State Park

We started off this morning having breakfast at Penny's Dinner in Glendive.

It was a fun place to eat and the food was pretty darn good.

Then we drove over to Makoshika State Park where we took an auto tour of the Badlands.  If you like rock formations, this is the park for you. I think I took more pictures here than anywhere else on the trip. It was hard to cut the number of pictures down to the ones I selected. The landscapes just kept changing from one turn to the next and the formations were some of the most interesting that we've seen!

Lee heading into the Visitor Center

One wall in the Visitor Center was all window and there was a great view out of this window.

This guy was in front of the Visitor Center

Makoshika State Park is Montana's largest state park and it features badlands formation and fossil remains of Tyrannosaurus Rex, Triceratops and other prehistoric dinosaurs. The name Makoshika comes from the Lakota word for "bad land" or "bad earth".

After visiting all the displays and watching a great movie in the Visitor Center, we headed to the SUV and started our journey around the park.

I (Mary) took one ton of pictures from my side of the SUV and it was hard to decide what to take because everything was beautiful and a lot of it was very unusual. So, it has been hard to cut the number of pictures down but I tried!

Chipping Sparrow

We walked out to this area to get a better view and it was soooo windy that it was sometimes hard to stand up. You can see that Lee kept his hand on his hat or it would have been history!

Some of the most unusual formation in the park were in this area. We've never seen anything like them. Pedestals that look like they might be a part of a palace or some such structure!

Aren't these rock formations something!!!

We think you can rent the tepee and stay in it.

You can see the Yellowstone River in the background
