Warren G. Harding Home & Tomb

Today we headed out to visit another of the presidential sites in Ohio. We drove over to Marion, Ohio to visit Warren G. Harding's home and tomb.

Harding Tomb in Marion, Ohio

We first visited his tomb which makes a real statement and can be seen from the highway. The Harding Tomb is a circular monument of white Georgia marble containing the remains of President and Mrs. Harding. The monument is set on 10 acres of landscaped grounds and is similar in appearance to a round Greek temple. The tomb is 103 feet in diameter and 53 feet in height.

The open design honors the wishes of the Hardings that they be buried outside. The memorial is also important in American history because it is the last of the elaborate presidential tombs, a trend that began with the burial of President Abraham Lincoln in his tomb in Springfield, Illinois.

After we visited the tomb, we drove a short distance to his home in Marion. In 1890, Harding and Florence Kling DeWolfe designed and arranged for the construction of their home where they lived until 1920 when he became President. They built the home in anticipation of their marriage which took place in the large front hallway of the completed house in July 1891.

More Information

We were all waiting on the porch for our tour
The home became important in history as Harding was the last of four presidents who used the front porch for campaigning instead of venturing across country.
