Dark Hollow Falls in Shenandoah National Park

We continued our drive and right around Mile Marker 50.7 there is a parking lot for the trail to Dark Hollow Falls. We decided that we would give it a go as it is less than a mile to the falls. Of course, the trail descends steadily and sometimes sharply until you reach them. That means, of course, that the trip up is a lot more strenuous than going down since there is a 440 foot elevation change in this short hike.

This is a popular trail so there were quite a few other people on the trail. We took our time and enjoyed the hike and the falls were definitely worth the hike. We took our time going back up too because we just needed to catch our breath once in awhile.

We stopped at the Harry F. Byrd Visitor Center for a rest room stop and, thank goodness, the rest rooms were open even though the Visitor Center wasn't. They had a nice memorial to the Civilian Conservation Corps and Mary had her picture taken next to a CCC guy.

Then we drove on and stopped again at the Big Meadows Lodge. They were open so we took a look around and had our picture taken with a stuffed black bear in the entry area to the lodge.

On the way home it got really foggy and it was not fun driving. Even so, we made a stop at a Walmart to pick up some groceries as we were getting pretty low on essentials.
