Confederate Breastworks

After leaving Natural Chimney Regional Park, we drove to the Confederate Breastwork Interpretive Site Trail about twenty miles outside of Staunton. The trenches dug at this site date from the Civil War and were used to defend Staunton during the Shenandoah Valley Campaign of 1862. The trail is about a half mile and winds along the fortifications dug into the top of the Shenandoah Mountain. Signs all along the trail tell the story of how the breastworks was built and how it was used to defend against Yankee invaders.  There were also signs with letters from a Confederate soldier to his wife posted along the way.  They were really quite heart wrenching.

The letters keep coming

Since we were rapidly loosing daylight, we decided it was time to return to our campground. We stopped at the Walmart in Staunton for groceries and headed back to Stoney Creek Resort in Greenville.
