The Grand Hotel

Our next stop was the Grand Hotel. Since we weren't paying to spend the night we each had to pay $10 to take an on-your-own tour of the facilities. It was worth it!

Carlton's Tea Shop

Lee looking at a menu
We were starving at this point and the Grand Buffet had just closed so we had lunch at Carlton's Tea Shop.   There are no tables in the shop but there are some along the windows in the long hall going to the front desk.  The waiter came to us and served us so it was nice.  Lee had a Reuben and I had a salad. They were both really good and reasonably priced.

My salad - that is round bacon at the top!

Lee' Reuben
What was funny is that we watched a very wealthy-looking retired couple at the next table eat their lunch.  They were kind of snooty looking, you know the type.  Anyway, after they were done eating, they stayed for quite awhile and I noticed she kept looking for the waiter.  That is until he went inside for awhile.  Then they just got up and left without paying!  When the waiter came out he just looked astounded.  I told him which way they went and he went looking for them but he never found them.   I saw them later heading to town on a carriage.  You just never know who you can trust!!

Ladies' Rest Room
After we felt rejuvenated from our lunch, we wandered around the hotel and took tons of pictures.

Of course, my favorite place was the hotel porch/balcony overlooking the gardens and Lake Huron. What a wonderful place to sit and watch the rest of the world go by!

The Top Level of the Cupola
We took a bunch of pictures up in the cupola which was on two levels. You had to walk a couple of flights of steps to get to it. There is a bar in the lower level of the cupola and a piano and tables with seating in the upper part. We took advantage of all the windows and took a bunch of pictures of the grounds.

Leaving the Grand Hotel
All in all, we had a wonderful day. After we left the hotel, we went back downtown to shop around a little. Lee did buy a shirt that was on sale in one of the shops. We hung around the island until the last ferry for the evening.
