Our last stop for the day was Medicine Rocks State Park near Ekalaka, Montana. We were really glad that we stopped. This place is really special. You get the feeling as your drive or walk by these formations that you are walking into the lands of the Native American Ancestral Spirits. I was glad that we arrived when it was still sunny out. Walking around these formations would be a bit eerie as dusk approaches! It was eerie enough in the daylight especially since we didn't see another person while we were there!
"As its name implies, Medicine Rocks was a place of 'big medicine' where Indian hunting parties conjured up magical spirits. 'As fantastically beautiful a place as I have ever seen,' said one of its first tourists in the late 1800s, a young rancher named Teddy Roosevelt. Weathering has given the soft sandstone rock formations a Swiss cheese look. The park is also a haven for mule deer, antelope, Woodhouse's toad and sharp tailed grouse. " (From https://www.visitmt.com/)
"The park is named for the "Medicine Rocks," a series of sandstone pillars similar to hoodoos some 60 to 80 feet (18 to 24 m) high with eerie undulations, holes, and tunnels in them. The rocks contain numerous examples of Native American rock art and are considered a sacred place by Plains Indians."
