Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument

Today we visited the Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument which is near Florissant, Colorado. "The Florissant Formation is a sedimentary geologic formation outcropping around Florissant, Teller County, Colorado. The formation is noted for the abundant and exceptionally preserved insect and plant fossils that are found in the mudstones and shales." (Wikipedia)

We hiked the one mile Petrified Forest Trail and I (Mary) would warn anyone that it was the longest one mile she ever walked!

Thousands of detailed fossils of insects have been found in the Florissant fossil beds and many are on display in the Visitor Center. Many cannot be seen anywhere else.
