Day 2: Stop 5: Natchez Trace Parkway (off the Trace to see the Home Of Helen Keller)

The Trace runs through just a small part of Alabama that is only 33 miles in length. However, this portion of the road is not to be missed.

Our first few stops in Alabama were actually off the Trace but we wanted to take a bit of a detour to see some of the sights that are close.

Our first stop was Ivy Green, the home of Helen Keller and Ann Sullivan. Ivy Green is located at 300 North Commons Street, West Tuscumbia, Alabama. This home is where Helen was civilized and taught by Ann Sullivan.  The story of these two is so intriguing. I remember reading a book about it when I (Mary) was young but to listen to the stories is just awe inspiring.

This is the small home that was built
by Helen's GrandparentIt is where Ann
Sullivan and Helen lived while Helen learned.

We love the large old trees here in the South

Root Cellar

This is the well pump that was used by Ann Sullivan to spell out the word "water" with hand signals to Helen Keller. At the end of that wonderful day, Helen could spell out eight different words and the world became an open book for her.

The grounds were beautiful
