We still had lots of daylight so we headed to Wells Falls which is also known as Business Mans Lunch. It is called Wells Falls because the water has worn round holes or wells into the rock. The falls are directly below VanNattas Dam. We had a devil of a time finding the falls, probably because we were using our GPS. I think we should have found directions before we started!
The area is very picturesque as a crumbling old power plant sits beside the dam. The dam creates a 30-foot free-fall followed by 3 natural cascades 5, 15, and 15 feet respectively. It drops into a large pool where Six Mile Creek bends at the base of a huge stone wall. Listen for the echo off this wall as your eyes feast on the glorious sights. From the end of the trail at the base of Wells Falls be sure to look downstream, across the creek, to see water plummeting 70 feet down the far cliff wall.
This falls plummets 70 feet down the far cliff wall. Lee climbed all the way down to the base of the falls and I stayed up on top. The terrain looked pretty treacherous and slippery to me and so I played this one safe. Lee was bound to get that picture though!
