Hershey Chocolate World

Since we were not able to get to the RV Show because of dead batteries this morning.  We decided to spend the afternoon at Hershey's Chocolate World.  We really expected the whole town to smell like chocolate but it didn't - not even a trace.  I suppose that was good for my diet though!  They did say during our tour that the factory that makes Reese's Peanut Butter Cups really smells like peanut butter.

Tickets for the Trolley Sold Here
We were not interested in visiting the theme park but we decided to take a trolley tour of some of the sights in Hershey.  We bought our tickets at this stand.

Milton Hershey Middle School
Milton Hershey was quite a guy.  We learned that he had tried to make a go of the candy business several times.  He went bankrupt at least twice before he became a success.  He and his wife couldn't have children so they started a school for boys.  They didn't include girls at first because they normally would get adopted because they were useful in helping around the house.  Later he expanded the school to include girls.  When he passed away all of his fortune went to taking care of needy children at his schools.  The foundation now takes care of 1900 children.  They provide them nice homes with a couple of caretakers in each home that provide some guidance and help the kids with their homework, etc.  Hershey has a grade school, a middle school and a high school.  Each of the children that graduates from his school receives a scholarship of $80,000 to attend college.   And, what is absolutely wonderful, is that every piece of Hershey chocolate that you buy goes to providing more children with a stable home and a good education so they can have a bright future.  I'm glad one of my favorite candies is Hershey's Bliss!!

We learned a lot about Milton Hershey on the tour and really enjoyed it.  The only problem was that it was about impossible to get any decent pictures on the tour.  Later on we drove around town again and stopped to take pictures at some of the places we had passed on the tour.
