Get Together with Cuhels, Schaubs and Taylors

Since we started full-timing in 2006, we  have had an annual get together at Ken & Carol Cuhel's when we arrive home to visit family and friends. Sometimes we have met at a restaurant but most times Carol has wanted to have us over for dinner. She and all of my church girlfriends are wonderful cooks so we never could pass this up (not just for the food either).

Last year when we visited, we found that Ken was starting to fail and this year he was much worse. So Carol and Barb decided that we'd have steaks on the grill which Larry grilled. Carol made a beautiful raspberry dessert and Carol Cuhel provided the sweet corn (Oh, do we love Iowa sweet corn!) and some muffins. They always let me off the hook since we are going from family to friends every day during the time we are in Cedar Rapids. If they ever get to Texas, it will be my turn so I hope I'm not TOO OLD!!

The steaks are huge so it will take a bit of time to get them done!

We always sit in the kitchen area and talk and eat appetizers before dinner. Most of the time we are full before we sit down to eat!

Can you believe how big these steaks are! We all took at least half a steak home for tomorrow!

There is nothing like Iowa Sweet Corn!

Look at this wonderful dessert! Beautiful and Delicious!

After we ate, we sat around and talked until really late. It was so good to see everyone. We sure miss all of them when we leave Iowa!

We, of course, knew that Ken was very sick and we got a call in November that he had passed away we were not surprised. We are so glad that we had this visit and meal with Carol and Ken together. He was such a good guy and a wonderful husband and father. We enjoyed singing with him in the choir at First Congregational United Church of Christ for all the years that Lee and I lived together in Cedar Rapids. We will miss him. His obituary is in the link below.
