UFO Museum in Roswell, New Mexico

After leaving Gallup, NM, the quickest route to South Texas took us to Roswell, NM. We found a nice RV park on the south side of town and decided to spend two nights so we'd have a day to look around town.

We couldn’t stay in Roswell, New Mexico, without visiting the International UFO Museum and Research Center. This museum contains documents and other materials related to the 1947 Roswell incident which is probably the most famous UFO encounter in history. On July 4, 1947 at about 11:50 PM, Rancher Mac Brazel heard a loud noise different from thunder. The next day Brazel, accompanied by his neighbor’s son Dee Proctor, age 7, discovered the debris field while out working the ranch property. It was an area about 300 yards wide and three-quarters of a mile long. The two of them gathered what was described as a sackful of the stuff (debris). Brazel delivered the gathered materials to Sheriff Wilcox in Roswell who called Intelligence Officer Jesse Marcel. Marcel went with Brazel back to the ranch and investigated the site and showed some of the debris to his boss, Col. Blanchard, Roswell Army Airfield (RAAF) commander.

Meanwhile, Glenn Dennis a local undertaker, was contacted by RAAF personnel about supplying child-sized caskets that could be hermetically sealed. He was also asked about preserving bodies that had been exposed to the elements after death and the effects of embalming fluid on such bodies. While on a routine visit to the base hospital later that day, Dennis was abruptly and roughly escorted off the base by military police and told to keep quiet about what he’d seen under threat to his life. It wasn’t long before the military issued a press release claiming the “craft” had been a weather balloon and thus began one of the biggest government cover-ups in US history up to that time.

According to its mission statement, “The International UFO Museum and Research Center at Roswell, New Mexico was organized to inform the public about what has come to be known as “The Roswell Incident.” The Museum is... dedicated to the collection and preservation of materials and information in written, audio and visual formats that are related to the 1947 Roswell Incident and other unexplained phenomena related to UFO research. The Museum endeavors to be the leading information source in history, science and research about UFO events worldwide. The International UFO Museum’s constituents are committed to gathering and disbursing to all interested parties the most qualified and up to date information available.” One of the museum’s principal founders was Glenn Dennis, the former undertaker involved in some of the events.

There are countless eyewitness affidavits attesting to the events of July 1947 and you can’t leave there without feeling we’re not alone in the universe. Not all those people could be “UFO-nuts.”

This area of the museum is devoted to pictures from all around the world of unexplained and unidentified craft in the skies.

Then they also have some info from the movies

The museum is a “don’t-miss” point of interest in Roswell.
